Phobias

An intense fear that decides for you — the routes you take, the places you avoid, the invitations you decline. Phobias are common, well understood, and they respond well to careful, step-by-step work.

What we work on together

Fear of flying

Travelling again without anxiety coming on board.

Social phobia

Taking your place among others again, without exhaustion.

Fear of spiders

Defusing an overwhelming fear, one step at a time.

How a phobia takes hold — and how it loosens

A phobia is more than a strong fear. It is an intense, persistent reaction to a specific situation or object — flying, speaking in front of others, spiders — out of proportion to the actual danger, and hard to reason away. Most people who live with one know perfectly well that their fear is excessive. Knowing changes nothing: the alarm fires anyway. That gap between what you know and what you feel is the signature of a phobia, and it is nothing unusual — large international surveys estimate that around one person in thirteen lives with a specific phobia at some point in life.

What keeps a phobia alive is rarely the object itself. It is avoidance. Turning down the trip, taking the stairs, asking someone else to deal with the spider — each avoided encounter brings immediate relief, and that relief teaches the brain that the danger was real and that escape is what saved you. The fear is left intact, and its territory quietly grows. This is not weakness; it is learning. And what has been learned can be relearned.

That is why the best-supported approaches to specific phobias are built around gradual, structured exposure: approaching what frightens you in small, agreed steps, at a pace you set, so the alarm can recalibrate on its own — with tools to steady the body along the way, and medical hypnosis as a complement when appropriate. Sessions last about an hour. Nothing is ever forced, and you remain in control from the first step to the last.
